But you’re still not as confident as you’d like to be and maybe you haven’t surfed in a while – so how do you progress to the next level? Improve your surfing both in and out of the water on this intensive two-day surf programme, where you will learn how to confidently paddle out back and catch green waves by developing your paddle and pop up technique and increasing your ocean awareness.

APARTMENTS.
We have two apartments that we use, both equally as beautiful as each other. We will allocate you to a room at the time of booking.
Our first apartment overlooks Pentire Headland and benefits from plenty of natural light. This two-bedroom property is located close to Fistral Beach and Newquay Town Centre; ideal for a post-lesson surf or a bite to eat in the evening. Both the Gannel Estuary and Crantock Beach are within walking distance too. Our luxury apartment benefits from elevator and staircase access.
There is a spacious, open-plan kitchen diner and a juliet balcony that enjoys morning sunshine for alfresco breakfasts. The dining room houses a large dinner table with ocean views. The large lounge comprises a sofa-bed, flat-screen TV and south-facing balcony. Each bedroom has a set of twin beds, a wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside table and reading light. One has an en-suite with a bath, shower and toilet. There is also a separate bathroom and WC. Both bedrooms have stunning sea views.
The second choice is our Newquay Bay Apartment. This apartment is located above the Newquay Activity Centre HQ. It is a modern, quiet, two-bedroom property that was completely refurbished in 2021. There is a modern kitchen as well as a new bathroom. The apartment is a short walk from Newquay Harbour where you will find one of our favourite wild swimming spots. In the opposite direction, you’ll find Newquay Town Centre with an abundance of coffee shops, restaurants and surf shops.
The property comprises a spacious living room/diner complete with sofa bed and new 52” TV. There is a sizeable dining table perfect for studying or hosting meals. The bedrooms are both twin rooms with zip-link beds; easily connectable for private or couple rooms. Both rooms have wardrobes, drawers, bedsides and reading lights. The living room benefits from large windows with excellent sea views. There is also a large courtyard, perfect for catching rays or drying wetsuits.
Once booked, we’ll send you all the accommodation details with near by parking and directions.
BOARD BAG (OPTIONAL)
A decent board bag will protect your kit and store bulky things like your wetsuit, boots and a towel..
BOARD SOCK (OPTIONAL)
A cheaper option than a board bag, it’ll protect your board from the sun and double up as a board towel. They don’t offer as much protection as a bag.
WETSUIT BOOTS
Keep your toes toasty between November and April with some well fitting neoprene boots. We can supply if you don’t have your own.
GLOVES
Keep your digits warm when the water gets chilly from mid January to the end of March. We can supply if you don’t have your own.
HOOD
Only required in the depths of winter, especially if you regularly duck dive or fancy some extra warmth. We can supply if you don’t have your own.
SUN PROTECTION
This is essential in the summer and even on colder days – the sun’s rays still penetrate through the clouds and reflect off the water’s surface.
Make sure you wear waterproof sunscreen. Zinc based sticks are a good option and won’t run into your eyes.
CLOTHING
Bring warm clothing suitable for all weathers – it’s not uncommon to get four seasons in one day in the south west of England. Layers are the best option and a woolly hat is ideal for warming up after a cold surf.
We’ll send you an email a week before the programme starts to let you know where and when to meet us in Newquay. Here’s everything you need to know about the local area and the many waves!
AREA
Known as “Kernow” to locals, Cornwall is beautiful, wild and rugged.
A string of golden beaches stretch up and down the coastline, with a variety of surf from mellow rollers to steep, powerful waves.
Head inland and discover the raw beauty of Cornwall’s wilderness moorland, granite-topped hills and ancient stone structures. Explore abandoned pumping houses – relics of the county’s famous mining history – uncover local traditions and breathe in the fresh sea air as you watch sunsets that set your soul on fire.
NEWQUAY
Our cool little surf town has a laid-back vibe and friendly community. It’s full of independent shops and cute cafes, with three beaches right in the town centre.
Grab an artisan coffee and watch surfers wander down the streets to the waves, or stock up on your surf essentials. Visit the RipCurl store near Newquay Activity Centre – and receive a 15% discount when you join one of our coaching weekends.
WAVES
Newquay is known as the UK’s surf capital – and for good reason.
The town is surrounded by golden beaches, with beautiful waves and epic sunsets. Feel the laid-back vibe as soon as you arrive in this chilled out surf town. Look out for road signs covered in surf stickers, cute cafes and surfers heading to the waves.
Most of the beaches work on different tides, wind and swell directions, so you’ll always find a wave somewhere if you know where to look. This is where we’re from, so we use our local knowledge to find the best conditions for the day and those secret spots.
As well as surfing the best-known breaks, we’ll also head off the beaten track and take you to places only a few know about.
TOWAN BEACH
This sheltered, sandy bay is the perfect spot when the west-facing beaches are big and blown out. It’s the most friendly break for beginners, and you’ll almost always find a fun, clean wave here. It’s also the Women Waves HQ – our centre is right on the beach.
FISTRAL
Backed by rugged cliffs and sand dunes, Fistral Beach is the jewel in the crown of Cornwall’s surf scene. It delivers waves on every stage of the tide and serves up dreamy conditions on an offshore southeasterly wind. You can almost always find a suitable peak for your ability. We’ve got another centre at Fistral, making it easily accessible for changing and parking.
GREAT WESTERN BEACH
Wedged between Towan and Tolcarne, this is one of Newquay’s central beaches. It offers consistent, clean conditions in a southwesterly wind. There are plenty of lefts and rights for everyone.
Other great spots nearby include Crantock, Perranporth and Watergate Bay. There are plenty more that offer uncrowded perfection on their day – you just need to know where to look. That’s where we come in.
CLIMATE
Lucky for us, Cornwall benefits from the warmest air and sea temperatures in the UK. Thanks to both the jet stream in the atmosphere and the Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean, Newquay has a relatively mild climate all year round. With our varied coastline we have our own little micro-climates from one beach to the next, so make sure you always pack sun cream.
Always dreamed of riding waves but never taken the plunge? Or maybe you’ve had a couple of lessons but still struggling to get to your feet? Whether you’re completely new to surfing or you’re still winging it in the whitewash, this immersive two-day surf programme will equip you with the tools, techniques and confidence to kickstart your surfing journey.
The Progressor Surfer Programme will teach you how to confidently paddle out back and catch green waves (and how to select the best ones). How to deal with steep take-offs and the skills required to make a drop. Where to sit in the lineup and why. Which wave to pick from a set and how to handle crowded days. How to read forecasts, learn about winds, tides, swell direction and how it will affect your session. Dealing with changing ocean conditions and successfully managing rips. How to gain speed and read sections of a wave to lengthen your rides. Plus, you’ll fine-tune your paddle techniques and perfect your pop-up.
On the two-day Intermediate Surfer Programme, you’ll be taking a deep dive into the technical side of surfing. Think bottom and top turns, trimming and pumping, carves and cutbacks, angled and steeper take-offs, generating speed from your bottom turn and catching bigger waves… There’s a lot to cover on this one, so come prepared to seriously level up your surfing!
This course is for you if you can consistently catch broken waves and are now looking to progress to the next level – paddling outback and catching unbroken waves. It’s all about improving your confidence in and out of the water through ocean awareness, wave selection and paddle and pop up techniques. You need to be comfortable with going beyond the whitewater and out of your depth to the lineup.

All our Women + Waves staff are not only suitably qualified by the relevant governing body but all undergo extensive in-house training.
