A tropical island paradise just a short hop from Bali, Nusa Lembongan is all about slow living, beach sunsets, rich culture and incredible food. You’ll get heaps of personalised coaching from our expert instructors, and ride the best waves of your life. Away from the surf there is more to experience than you’ll be able to fit in; this isn’t a bootcamp, quite the opposite. Take Nusa Lembongan at your own pace, snorkel, explore, hike, and experience the best of Island life and surf culture.
If you dream of skyrocketing your surfing and also exploring Indonesia’s epic underwater landscapes, wildlife and culture, then this trip to the island paradise of Nusa Lembongan is for you. Over ten days, you’ll progress your surfing and embrace the spiritual and adventurous side of this tiny island. Surrounded by a crew of like-minded women, you’ll learn new surf techniques and have an awesome time together.
We’ll take care of everything both on and off the water, so you can focus on catching waves and soaking up everything Nusa Lembongan has to offer. Our expert coaching will see your surfing soar. We have also included plenty of time for you to experience Nusa Lembongan however you wish, be it by snorkelling in pristine water teeming with colourful tropical fish and shimmering coral reefs, visiting beautiful Hindu temples, hiking around the island, watching epic sunsets or touring the wide array of incredible restaurants on the island.
Nusa Lembongan is home to some of the best waves on the planet, so we’ve been organising trips here for 15 years. Our local instructor team knows all the best learner and developer waves, and Rendy, our Indonesian photographer and guide will be capturing your waves from land, sea and drone. You’ll see huge improvements in your surfing during this trip, and have an incredible photography package to take home with you.
WHO IS THIS TRIP FOR?
This trip is suitable for surfers of all abilities with a good level of fitness – Beginners, Progressors and Intermediates. If you’re a beginner, we’ll get you up and riding in no time. Progressor Surfers will learn how to confidently paddle out back and catch green waves. Intermediate Surfers who are comfortably surfing out back beyond the breaking waves and consistently catching green waves will learn all the tricks and techniques: bottom and top turns, trimming and pumping, carves and cutbacks, angled and steeper take-offs, generating speed from your bottom turn and working on your confidence for catching bigger waves. Whatever your experience, we’ll help you to develop your surfing skills and increase your ocean awareness – all whilst having heaps of fun! This trip runs straight after our Bali trip, so if you’re hoping to seriously step up your surfing, there is always the option to do back-to-back surf camps.

INTRODUCTION TO SURF SKATING
Two Surf Skating sessions are included in the trip (all safety kit and surf skateboards are supplied). Courtenay, our trip leader, delivers this in a super fun session, we guarantee to have you skating by the end of it. Learn this super fun sport which is taking the surf community by storm. Surf skating is an invaluable tool to develop the dynamic body movements you require during surfing. It helps you improve your balance, generate speed and navigate through turns. We will deliver a series of drills that will enable you to practice toe and heel control, opening your shoulders and using your arms to draw clean lines through your turns. These workshops will increase your time spent on a board simulating these manoeuvres. Which in turn, will increase your balance, strengthen your muscle memory and increase your rate of progression on a surfboard.
PHOTO & VIDEO ANALYSIS
Seeing yourself surf is a fantastic way to improve your performance. Every day you’ll watch a move-by-move breakdown of your surfing with footage both from the air and in the water.
You’ll get to take a photo and video package home with you at the end of the week too, which is a helpful tool for your on-going progress and an epic memento of your trip.

Please note that this itinerary is just a guide. We will always consult local conditions to provide the best experience, and therefore some activities may swap and move around.
Day 1
Touch down in Bali! You’re about to spend 10 days totally absorbed in surf culture, riding world-class waves and hanging with a group of incredible like-minded women. With sunshine, culture, incredible food and beautiful island vibes all thrown into the mix… we hope you’re ready for the adventure!
At international arrivals, we’ll pick you up and transfer you to our stop-over hotel in Sanur for 1 night. There will be time to freshen up before the official welcome dinner on the beachfront – it’s a chilled evening, a chance to meet the other women on the trip and share the stoke for the days ahead.
Day 2
We’ll leave the buzz of Bali behind and take a ferry over to the island paradise that is Nusa Lembongan. We’ll drop off your bags at the hotel before heading to meet your surf coaches for the week, share your surf goals and select your surfboards! We’ll shake off the travel legs with some surf-focused dynamic stretches before boarding the boat that takes us straight to the surf spot (no paddle-out needed!) and then dive into the crystal clear waters for your first session. In the afternoon, we’ll show you to your private bungalows and give you some time to settle in. Afterwards, we’ll play back the videos captured by our camera team and discuss your surf goals for the following day. We’ll also share key knowledge on surf etiquette and ocean awareness that will help you feel comfortable in the line up for your second surf session.
Day 3
We will do a morning pool workshop focusing on turtle rolls, paddling technique and duck diving to help you navigate the sets and get into position to catch the best waves for you! In the afternoon we’ll put your new skills to practice and go for a surf. When we get home, we’ll showcase the footage filmed by our team and do our second video analysis session over some well-deserved lunch!
Day 4
With a new set of goals to focus on, we’ll head out on the boats for another afternoon surf. We’ll help you to choose the best waves possible and give you a push if needed! After video analysis, we’ll offer a workshop on wave reading and speed generation skills to help you independently select your own waves and then be up and riding for as long as possible!
Day 5
Today is a rest day from surfing. We’ll head out to some of the most epic snorkel spots in the area and turn our attention to the beauty and magic that lies beneath the waves. Nusa Lembongan is a world-class snorkelling and scuba diving site and you’ll have the opportunity to spot manta rays, turtles, coral gardens and thousands of tropical fish.
Day 6
In the cooler morning temperatures, we’ll run the first of our two surf skate workshops. Surf skating is an invaluable tool to develop the dynamic body movements you require during surfing. This practical workshop will link all the theory we’ve already covered to the physical movements of the body that are required to generate speed, navigate through turns and maintain your balance when riding a surfskate and/or surfboard. Then in the afternoon, we’ll hit the water to put it all to practice in your filmed surf session.
Day 7
You guessed it! More surfing today! Afterwards, we’ll review your videos and take a look at the forecast for the rest of the week together. We’ll answer any questions you may have about which forecasting Apps to use and how to read all the data – those numbers and charts can be confusing! Later on, we’ll ease your muscles with a post-surf stretch session.
Day 8
We’ll start the day with the second surfskate workshop. With a focus on turns, we will get you to practice toe and heel control, opening your shoulders and using your arms to draw clean lines through your turns. This will increase your balance, strengthen your muscle memory and increase your rate of progression on a surfboard. You’ll then have the afternoon free to do some shopping, check out some cafés or just chill around the pool. Then as the sun starts to cool off, we’ll head out into the water for a dreamy sunset session together.
Day 9
Today is your chance to explore! It is a free day to discover the island as you wish and tick-off any extra activities on your Indo bucket list. Perhaps a diving course, a SUP tour of the Mangroves or take a ride across the infamous yellow bridge to the neighbouring island Nusa Cinigan.
Day 10
Our final full day in Nusa Lembongan will begin with an early surf. This final session will be filmed but there will be no video analysis – so let loose, bring your best moves and most importantly have fun! We’ll do a screening of the videos to praise and applaud those final rides! We’ll also do a Q&A session – a chance to have any final burning questions answered! Then in the evening, we’ll celebrate an incredible trip together, we’ll grab a drink and watch the sun as it sets on your last night in Indonesia.
Day 11
All too soon, it’s time to say goodbye to Nusa Lembongan (for now!) and fly home. We’ll get the ferry together and make sure we get you to the airport in good time for your flight. Please see our Travel Section for more information.

AREA
Just a 45-minute ferry ride from Bali lies the idyllic island of Nusa Lembongan. This piece of paradise covers just 8km square and has a population of around 5000 people. In stark contrast to its larger sister, Bali, the roads of Nusa Lembongan are much quieter. Scooters and trucks make up the bulk of the traffic with cars being seen only very rarely, though due to its remote location the state of the road network leaves a lot to be desired.
Recent years have seen construction work begin around the island as the rest of the world slowly discovers its beauty and potential. The next five or ten years could see a boom in the tourism of Nusa Lembongan as a larger infrastructure is created and the accessibility of the island improves.
One huge draw for locals and tourists alike in this part of Indonesia is the opportunity to see and swim with manta rays. The plankton-rich waters around the small island of Nusa Lembongan make it a perfect feeding ground for these majestic ocean dwellers. Watch them elegantly glide through the crystal-clear waters towards you while you snorkel patiently at the surface.
As these great rays come to say hello, you will be amazed at how graceful they are for their size. Often reaching spans of up to 7 metres, you can’t help but be impressed by these gentle giants. These docile yet sometimes inquisitive mantas will have no problem sharing the ocean with you while they look for their lunch. An incredible experience you won’t forget in a hurry.
We first started visiting Nusa Lembongan over 20 years ago and to this day we are still in awe of its natural beauty. The clarity of the surrounding ocean is like nothing you’ve ever experienced. The orange glow of the setting sun dances light across the Indian Ocean before disappearing for the evening. It’s nights like these that you can really embrace everything that Indonesia is about.
ADDITIONAL (OPTIONAL) THINGS TO DO:
WAVES
Put on your sunnies and settle yourself in the shaded end of our infinity pool. Then look across the blue water expanse of the lagoon in front of you. To the south end of the bay you will see the fun, deep water peaks of Playgrounds, it’s a playful peak that makes improving your surfing easy. To the right is a wave called ‘Lacerations’ (we promise it’s not as scary as it sounds) which is an excellent coaching wave when the swell is smaller.
To the southern end of the lagoon are the fast-breaking left handers of Razors and the running right hand walls of Shipwrecks. From the breaks that you can see from the pool alone there is plenty to keep the stoke levels high for day after day of surfing. At the right tide, these surf spots offer awesome beginner, progressor and intermediate waves.
A new experience for many will be being picked up from the beach by our private surf taxi before each session. He will drop us to our lineup of choice. The boat then waits for us in the channel allowing you to return to the boat to grab a drink, apply sunscreen, take photos or chill out. It’s a fantastic system that you will soon learn to love.
CLIMATE
You can expect warm and sunny weather every day with the odd evening downpour (depending on how quickly the seasons are changing from wet to dry). We hit the road early to score the best waves and benefit from the early morning temperatures.
The sea temperature in Nusa Lembongan is bath-like – it doesn’t drop below 20℃ and usually hovers around 29℃ in spring (when we visit). So you can forget your wetsuit and pack bikinis and boardies for surfing instead. It’s the ultimate way to escape the chilly northern hemisphere weather.
A delicious and healthy breakfast is served each morning on the decking overlooking the surf breaks. This is included in the price.
Eating out and experiencing the local food culture is one of the highlights of the trip. There are plenty of open-air restaurants taking full advantage of the views, so you’ll be blessed with idyllic options at every turn.
The geography of Nusa Lembongan serves its cuisine just as well as it serves its surf breaks. Being a small island, restaurants and locals rely heavily on what the ocean has to offer, so if you like seafood, you won’t want to miss out on this part of the trip!
Nusa Lembongan, much like the rest of Southeast Asia, is quite unique when it comes to food and home cooking. Many young people choose to eat from street vendors and local restaurants, this brings a real communal feel into the area and a fantastic atmosphere after dusk. You’ll find many warungs (local family-owned restaurants), cafes and bars offering local dishes, but you can also expect to enjoy lots of modern westernised eateries too.
Indonesia is a place where you can pick up delicious local meals for a couple of quid. The price will of course increase if you decide to eat in the more westernised restaurants, but you’ll still find your money stretching much further into the evening.

With decades of experience and knowledge within our team, we pick the best dates when the surf conditions are consistently fun and will be most suitable for the group. We’ll send you a brief predicted forecast in the pre-trip email. We choose Nusa Lembongan at this time of year due to the fun waves and gorgeous weather. The shoulder season is before the famous big swells of the dry season hit. The beautiful long sandy beaches offer peaks for all abilities; the skill is to know which is best on the tide and wind conditions that are on offer. That’s where our local guides are worth their weight in gold. We pride ourselves in having you in the right place for the best waves for your ability each trip. Your morning surfs will be a blissful experience!
Our Women + Waves trip leader will be accompanied by local surf instructors. We use female and male instructors during this trip.
We do not offer a discount for bringing your own equipment.
Remember to check the baggage size and weight allowance with your airline. Read their guidance for carrying surfboards. Baggage handlers can be unforgiving so you need a tough travel bag and pack it well.
Firstly, pack your board(s) in a protective, padded board bag, and write FRAGILE and TOP LOAD ONLY on it with the largest, most permanent marker you can find. Make sure you wrap your towel and clothes around your board inside the bag for added protection.
Place your shampoo and other wet toiletries in a separate sealed bag in case of leakage. We also recommend locking your bag zips with a padlock.
More than 80 nationalities can get a Visa on Arrival (VoA) when they arrive at the airport in Bali. This is valid for 30 days and costs IDR 500,000 (ca. USD 35). For more information, check Bali’s visa and immigration information page.
Please contact your travel agent or airline if you have any further questions. It’s a good idea to carry copies of your important documents and guidebooks. Pack them separately. We also suggest scanning copies and emailing them to yourself for extra reassurance.
If you are under 18 we will need to chat to you on the phone and you will need to be accompanied on the trip by a parent or guardian throughout the holiday (although they don’t need to participate in the surfing). If you are 60 or over we’d love to chat to you about the trip before you book. Please email us to arrange a time and we’ll contact you. Or you can call us on +44 (0) 7544 094518.
On the day you travel please keep your mobile phone handy so that we can stay in touch in case of delays and flight changes. Please inform us if you’re early or delayed for any reason.
If you need help to book your flight then just drop us a line.
If you can’t find our representative at the airport, stay there and wait, they won’t be far away having tracked your arrival time. However, if you’re having difficulties finding them, please call +44 (0) 7544 094518 or follow the instructions in your pre-flight email. One of us will locate you.
As with any holiday, full travel insurance is a requirement for all guests booking a trip with the company.
Please also ensure that your policy covers you for ‘disruption to travel’ and ‘cover for cancellations’ as standard.
For further help please read our helpful blog post about travel insurance.
You may need to add additional cover for surfing, it is essential that your insurance policy covers you for all activities during your stay. Failure to take out travel insurance breaks the contract between Women And Waves and the client.
If you are joining one of our trips and you are native to the country of its location (i.e you live in Lisbon and are joining our Portugal trip) you do not need to take out medical travel insurance. This is as long as you have your own personal health-care plan or are covered by your country’s National Health Service. Although, we kindly request that you still take out trip disruption and cancellation insurance to cover all possible eventualities.
