What people say

"Special thanks to Chelsea and team for making this Costa Rica trip so amazing! I had the best week of surfing in my life and my skills progressed immensely during the time spent with coaches and staff. Pura Vida!"

"I had a fabulous week in Costa Rica! Courtenay was a perfect host, introducing us to her life in Santa Teresa and taking us to the most gorgeous spots. Her sessions have left me feeling more confident in my understanding of what's going on in the water. A great balance of group and free time, so perfect for solo travellers who still want to be social/anyone who is on their first solo trip."

"Costa Rica Feb 2025 was the most magical trip. Everything was amazing from the waves, coaching, food, wildlife, accommodation, yoga, breathwork etc. The group of girls were amazing, all ages and abilities having a blast together. I got such second hand froth from them all! Chelsea the head coach is the most supportive, kind human ever <3 She gave incredibly helpful advice to help progress my surfing. I was able to swap between short and Longboard, which was great to make the most of the conditions on each day. We had some rad local female coaches too, who were our biggest cheerleaders in the water!"

"As an intermediate surfer I’ve never surfed such uncrowded, fun breaks as here in Nicaragua. You literally step out to an offshore beach break where there were never more than a handful of surfers out. If it got too hollow and punchy, so we shifted sessions to a gorgeous little bay just up the coast. On the last day I even took on the challenge of the nearby reef break!"

"I have just returned from an incredible Nicaragua trip. The coaching was excellent and everyone in the group made real progress. The accommodation, food and waves were spot on, and the group vibe was brilliant. I met some great people and would highly recommend this trip to anyone."

"This was my second trip and it exceeded every expectation. The coaching was outstanding, Nicaragua was stunning and the waves were unreal, especially the secret wedge. The whole experience felt special from start to finish. I only wish I had stayed longer and cannot recommend it highly enough."

In Nicaragua three meals a day are included in your trip. In Costa Rica daily breakfast is provided, giving you the freedom to explore a range of local eateries from street food to beach restaurants.

Nicaragua

Your trip includes three delicious meals a day – all freshly prepared onsite by our private chef and served at the main villa. Mealtimes are flexible and planned around the surf, so you’ll always be fuelled for the best sessions.

Hot coffee and bottled water are included and available 24/7.

Lunches and dinners are relaxed, social affairs enjoyed outdoors. Expect a mix of local and international dishes including fresh fish, grilled meats, tacos, chicken burger, salads and plenty of veggie options.

Extra Options (and nearby spots)

There are also great restaurants on the complex, so if you fancy missing an inclusive meal and eating out, just let us know in advance. There are options from sushi to pizza and poke bowls. We can personally recommend the Beach Club as a lovely spot to enjoy a sundowner and dining experience watching the last of the empty waves roll through.

On arrivals day we walk to the retail area (five mins away) and eat out to sample the local restaurants. The cost of this meal isn’t included in the trip price. This gives you a feel for your location and a taste of what’s available.

Costa Rica

Daily breakfast is included in your stay, where you can tuck into everything from gallo pinto (rice and black beans) to deep-fried plantains and fresh fruit including mango, guava and starfruit.

Bottomless filtered water is complimentary throughout your stay.

All other meals are at your own cost, giving you the freedom to self cater or explore the amazing cafés and restaurants nearby.

Many surf-loving chefs from around have set up kitchens in Santa Teresa, so there are plenty of restaurants, bars and cafés serving up delicious local flavours.

There’s a nearby supermarket if you want extra snacks, such as salty plantain or corn chips and chorreadas (pancakes).

If you’re on a budget or prefer to cook for yourself, there are plenty of local stores for provisions to use the self-catering facilities in your accommodation.

Boost your surfing performance with 14 days of professional coaching tailored for your level.

Travel

Costa Rica then Nicaragua? Or Nicaragua then Costa Rica? You decide. We’ll do the rest.

It’s easy to fly into one country and out of the other – and often saves you money. We’ve included travel information below to help you plan a seamless journey. But if it still seems too daunting, reach out and we’ll help you choose which flights to book for the best costs and timings.

If you’re starting your trip in Nicaragua you’ll need to arrange your own flights to Managua International Airport (MGA), and out of Cobano Airport, Costa Rica.

If you’re starting your trip in Costa Rica you’ll need to arrange flights into Cobano Airport, Costa Rica (usually via San Jose (SJO) Airport), and out of Managua (MGA), Nicaragua.

It’s best to book a ticket that transports your luggage directly to your arrival destination. Also, if your flight includes a stopover, please allow enough time to make your connection and factor in short delays.

You will also need to arrange your own flights between the two destinations. It’s very straight forward and we’ve done it many times – so please reach out if you need help to make it a smooth and hassle-free journey.

Getting to Costa Rica

Fly into San José (SJO) and take a separate, 22-minute domestic flight to Cobano (COB).

Domestic airlines: Green Airways or Sansa (around $200 – $300 USD return).

If you arrive in San José the night before, we recommend staying at an airport hotel and catching a morning flight to Cobano. Good nearby options include:

  • Hampton Inn & Suites San José Airport (directly opposite the terminal, reliable and comfortable)
  • Courtyard by Marriott San José Airport Alajuela (5 minutes from SJO with free shuttle)
  • Holiday Inn Express San José Airport (short transfer, convenient for overnight stays)

Getting to Nicaragua

Fly into Managua International Airport (MGA), where our airport transfer collection time is 14:00 on arrival day.

Our team will be waiting with a Women + Waves sign and will transfer you straight to your accommodation.

  • You’ll be greeted at arrivals by your Women + Waves trip leader and whisked straight to your accommodation (2-2.5 hours) for a welcome dinner with your new surf crew. The transfer is smooth, efficient and gets the trip off to a great start.
  • If you arrive at an airport other than Managua, you will need to make your own way to our accommodation.

Nicaragua

  • Arrival: Plan to land in Managua by 12:00pm (midday), to comfortably clear customs and baggage before the 14:00 group transfer. This takes 2-2.5 hours and is included in your package price.
  • If you can’t make the 14:00  transfer, we can arrange later transfers for around $100.
  • Many guests choose to fly in the day before and stay overnight – this makes for a relaxed arrival, helps blitz the jet lag and ensures you’re ready for the transfer the next day.
  • Departure: The transfer takes you back to Managua by 10:00am on departure day.
  • Please book flights no earlier than 12:00 (midday) to allow plenty of time for transfers and check-in.

Costa Rica

Arrival: Plan to arrive in Cobano Airport by 13:00, for your 13:30 transfer to Santa Teresa.

If you arrive outside this time we’ll arrange a taxi for you (40 minutes / $40-60 USD).

Departure: On your final day, we’ll ensure you’re back at Cobano Airport by 10:00. We recommend an afternoon flight out of San Jose for the last day of the trip.

If you want to arrive earlier or leave later, that’s fine. We’ll let you know where and when to meet us on the first day at our accommodation. However, please be aware that if you arrive at an airport other than Cobano or Managua, you will need to find your own way to our accommodation.

  • Baggage: Most international airlines allow around 23kg checked + 7kg hand luggage. Keep it light –  bikinis, surf wear and tropical clothing are all you need.
  • Surfboards: Boards under 7ft are easiest to fly with. If you don’t bring one, a range of boards is included with your package.
  • Flight advice: Check out our How to Book a Flight blog for step-by-step tips.
  • UK guests: For hassle-free booking, our trusted partner Lee at DialAFlight (+44 20 7295 1556) can organise international flights and connections.
  • Support: Once booked, we’ll send you all arrival details and add you to a WhatsApp group for live updates and assistance.

  • Visas: You do not need a visa to stay in Nicaragua for up to 90 days. In Costa Rica you will need to pay a $12 tourist visa entry fee on arrival.
  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months after your arrival date.
  • If you are travelling through the US you will need to apply for an ESTA online before you travel.

You’ll be asked to fill in an enrolment form as part of the booking process. You’ll signify which level of surfer you are. You may be in different groups suited to your ability. However, there will be plenty of time to see each other back at camp and during our social times.

We choose the time of year and location for our events based on local knowledge and historical swell data. Both Costa Rica and Nicaragua are incredibly consistent, each offering a fantastic variety of beaches.

In the very unlikely event of flat waves or stormy conditions, we will offer alternative activities and day trips to help you get the most out of your holiday.

We may also adjust the format of the trip, for example choosing to run more surf sessions on the days that the waves are at their best.

Please visit our T&Cs for more information.

With decades of experience and knowledge within our team, we pick the best dates when surf conditions are most suitable for the group. We’ll send you a brief predicted forecast in the pre-trip email. Both Costa Rica and Nicaragua are chosen for their fun waves and gorgeous weather, with beautiful long sandy beaches offering peaks for all abilities. Expect waves that are waist to chest height across both destinations. The skill is knowing which break is best on the tide and wind conditions on offer, and that’s where our local guides are worth their weight in gold. We pride ourselves on having you in the right place for the best waves for your ability each trip.

Before booking please take a look at our surfing level in the boxes above. If during the trip you would benefit from changing groups your instructor will organise for you to move, no problem! Please be aware, we pride ourselves on coaching everybody as an individual, so you will always receive individual feedback throughout each session.

Our Women + Waves trip leaders will be accompanied by local Costa Rican and Nicaraguan members of our coaching team. While our coaching team is predominantly made up of female instructors we also use male guides and instructors from time to time.

We do not offer a discount for bringing your own equipment.

Remember to check the baggage size and weight allowance with your airline. Read their guidance for carrying surfboards. Baggage handlers can be unforgiving so you need a tough travel bag and pack it well.

Firstly, pack your board(s) in a protective, padded board bag, and write FRAGILE and TOP LOAD ONLY on it with the largest, most permanent marker you can find. Make sure you wrap your towel and clothes around your board inside the bag for added protection.

Place your shampoo and other wet toiletries in a separate sealed bag in case of leakage. We also recommend locking your bag zips with a padlock.

Please check your citizenship and international travel requirements in advance for both countries.

When you leave Costa Rica you must pay a departure tax of $28 USD (correct at the time of writing).

If you’re travelling through America, you will need to complete a Visa Waiver form with a $14 USD application fee.

Please contact your travel agent or airline if you have any further questions.

It’s a good idea to carry copies of your important documents and guide books, packed separately, and we also suggest scanning copies and emailing them to yourself for extra reassurance.

If you are under 18 we will need to chat to you on the phone and you will need to be accompanied on the trip by a parent or guardian throughout the weekend (they don’t have to participate). If you are 65 or over we’d love to chat to you about the weekend before you book. Please email us to arrange a time and we’ll contact you. Or you can call us on +44 (0) 1637 226017

On the day you travel please keep your mobile phone handy so that we can stay in touch in case of delays and flight changes. Please inform us if you’re early or delayed for any reason. You will be added to our Whatsapp group so that we can share updates and stay in touch.

If you need help booking your flight then just drop us a line.

If you can’t find our representative at the airport, stay there and wait, they won’t be far away having tracked your arrival time. However, if you’re having difficulties finding them, please call +44 (0) 1637 226017 or follow the instructions in your pre-flight email. One of us will locate you.

Please inform our coaching staff of any medical complaints or conditions prior to your trip.

We’ll ask for travel insurance details when you book, so please organise this as soon as possible. Travel insurance needs to cover you for medical issues, cancellations and baggage. We’ll also ask you to fill out an enrolment form with these details before the holiday. Please read our helpful blog post about travel insurance.

Visit the Travel Health Pro website for medical advice for Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

Please contact your doctor if you’re unsure about vaccinations. We advise you to take mosquito repellent to avoid getting bitten, though we’ve never been aware of any malaria or dengue fever cases in the areas that we visit.

Both Costa Rica and Nicaragua are easy to navigate with US dollars, which are widely accepted in both countries. In Costa Rica, the local colon is also commonly used, so it’s worth being aware of both exchange rates as you’ll likely use both at some point. In Nicaragua, the local currency is the Córdoba, though USD is widely accepted in coastal and tourist areas.

We recommend bringing small-denomination USD cash for both destinations, as well as organising any local currency before you arrive. ATMs can be unreliable in both countries, may charge high fees, and aren’t always nearby. In Santa Teresa, if you do need to visit an ATM or bank, you can withdraw using a credit or debit card, though machines can be empty at weekends and queues can be long. You can also use your card and passport to take money out over the counter. Many bars and restaurants accept cards too.

We suggest bringing all the currency you plan to spend, plus at least two cards in case one gets blocked, lost or damaged. Don’t worry, you’ll have access to a safe in your room for valuables and cash. Planning your spending wisely will save you unnecessary trips to the bank and keep you where you want to be, in the surf!
