Calling All Ocean Lovers: Why Bodyboarding is a Must-Try!

Blog

Why Every Water-Woman Should Try Bodyboarding

The ocean has a magic to it, we are all aware of it – its vastness, rhythm, and raw beauty. Whether you are a seasoned surfer or just beginning to explore water sports, the ocean has an undeniable allure. There are so many ways to live our best surf lives, not just on a surfboard. One of the most accessible and exciting ways to experience that ocean magic is bodyboarding.

Bodyboarding offers a unique and thrilling way to ride waves. If you have ever thought about giving it a try, here’s why you need to get into bodyboarding.

1. Get in the Water and Build Confidence

Whether you are a seasoned pro or just starting out, one of the best things about bodyboarding is how it helps you build confidence in the water. Since the boards are smaller and more manoeuvrable than surfboards, it is easier to get used to larger waves without the challenge of standing and balancing.

The low-pressure nature of bodyboarding means you can spend more time in the water, learning wave patterns and strengthening your connection with the ocean. As you practice, you will gain confidence in paddling, catching waves, and riding them to shore – all while getting fitter and stronger.

“So many laughs and I came away with so much more water confidence and achieved my ambition of getting out in the green stuff.” – Margaret H., Women + Waves Bodyboard Weekend May 2024

2. Easy to Learn with Room to Progress

Bodyboarding is beginner-friendly with a low learning curve. You will quickly pick up wave timing and paddling, and before you know it, you’ll be riding waves all the way to shore. As you progress, you can refine your technique, ride bigger waves, and even learn advanced moves – all at your own pace.

At our Bodyboard Retreats and Weekends in Newquay, we meet you wherever you are on your journey. Our personalised coaching helps you elevate your skills, whether you prefer a focused 2-day programme or a full 7-day immersion.

3. Affordable and Accessible

Let’s be honest, surf gear can be expensive. Bodyboarding is more budget-friendly, with lightweight boards that do not require car racks or large storage space. They are also more durable, so you do not need to worry about dings and repairs like you would with a surfboard.

On our weekends and retreats, you can rent all the gear you need and try out professional-quality boards. Forget flimsy polystyrene supermarket boards – we provide proper bodyboards and even exclusive discount codes through our retail partners if you decide to buy your own.

4. Suitable for All Ages and Abilities

Bodyboarding is accessible for everyone, whether you are 7 or 75. It is easier on the body than surfing, suitable for different fitness levels, and offers flexibility depending on the conditions. You can enjoy mellow summer rollers or push yourself in more powerful surf – the choice is yours.

5. It’s Seriously Fun

At the heart of bodyboarding is pure fun. The rush of catching a wave, gliding on water, and feeling connected to the ocean is something every water lover should experience. But it is also about community. At Women + Waves, you will meet like-minded women, share tips, and make lasting friendships both in and out of the water.
