What a start to 2022! Gathering on a beautiful winter’s morning on an empty beach with perfect waves and a gentle offshore breeze, we couldn’t have asked for a better setting.

On January 15th we kicked off our first Rip Curl X Women + Waves Beginner Surf Programme at our new venue, Great Western Beach Cafe. After a coffee + a welcome meeting to establish our goals and a surf check, we jumped into Saturday’s first session to enjoy the lush conditions.

Mid way through we gathered on the beach for a break with some yummy vegan hot chocolate and some snacks to refocus our new aims for session number two.

All surfed out for the day, it was time to watch all the action back and dive into some surf theory. Video analysis is a great way to improv.   By analysing each wave it is easy to see your strengths and what you need to work on next time.

Our surf theory sessions are critical for building strong foundations for future surf adventures. Covering the basic fundamentals, along with forecasting and ocean awareness among other important lessons, allows our ladies to keep improving and feel more confident to surf alone. A game-changer this year is our new surf logbooks, it includes a breakdown of everything the ladies will learn over the weekend and goals to maximise progression. 

We finished off Saturday at The Secret Garden with a social dinner. It was a great chance to reflect on the epic sessions and really get to know the ladies we were gliding along the waves with. Not to forget some delicious pizza and cocktails went down a treat! 

Sunday had more stoke than we thought possible. We gathered again at Great Western Beach, the ladies received some amazing tips from Rip Curl surf pros, Brisa Hennessy and Molly Picklum. Ready to hit the water again for the final surf session, the ladies gave everything they had. We saw huge improvements, massive growth in confidence and some cheeky party waves with new found friends.

We couldn’t have asked for a better kickstart to the new year and our brand new surf academy, bring on the rest of the year!
