Surf Girl Hair Care Essentials!

How To

One of the few negative side effects of surfing is the damage a combination of saltwater and sunshine has on your hair. While we all love the sunkissed look – straw-dry hair is on no one’s bucket list! Our surf coaches have honed their hair care routines over the years to tackle summer’s effects, and now they’re sharing their haircare secrets with you. Tip 1 – Pre Surf Rinse

The main reason your hair dries out and becomes brittle and prone to breakages after surfing is that it absorbs salty seawater and then dries out under the sun. While this might give you that sun-kissed blonde surfer look, it also leaves your hair dry and crispy. To prevent this, rinse your hair through with fresh water before hitting the waves. This helps your hair absorb less salt water, locking in moisture and keeping it healthier.

Tip 2 – Pre Surf Oil or Conditioner

Before surfing use argan oil, coconut oil, or conditioner and spread it evenly through the lengths and the ends of your hair. Leaving in oil or conditioner before you get in the sea prevents it from getting tangled and protects it from the elements.

Tip 3 – Leave Your Hair Down

Although some people can find it frustrating when their hair gets in their face while surfing, tying it up with a hairband or elastic can lead to breakages. Instead, try surfing with your hair down. It feels free and natural, looks great, and won’t damage your hair.

Tip 4 – Post Surf Rinse

Now you’ve finished your surf session, when you get out of the water it’s important to rinse your hair with fresh water as quickly as possible. If your hair dries with the salt still in it, it will cause your hair to go dry and brittle – so wash it thoroughly with fresh water.

Tip 5 – No Shampoo After Surfing

Don’t shampoo your hair straight out of the sea, as the shampoo will cause your hair to dry out – stick with a good dollop of conditioner to bring the moisture back into your hair. Using leave-in conditioner or some moisturising oil means that when your hair dries it stays sleek and soft and doesn’t get damaged.
