How Do I Learn to Surf?

Learning to surf is all about gathering the right elements together to help you succeed. Follow our steps below for your path to becoming a surfer who shreds! From choosing your first lesson to picking up the correct equipment, every step of your surfing journey will take you closer to your goals.

Step 1. Equipment Essentials

Choosing the right equipment for your skill level is one of the most crucial aspects of learning to surf. Unfortunately, many beginners are discouraged simply because they started with the wrong gear. A quality beginner’s lesson will provide you with the essential equipment you need to get started and build confidence in the waves.

Not sure what gear you’ll need? Don’t worry, this guide is here to break it down for you in easy bite size pieces!

Surfboard – Foam Board (Soft Top Surfboard)

The obvious essential for starting to surf! Your starter surfboard should be a foam board, also known as a ‘foamie’. These large boards range from 7-to-9 feet long. They may look big and bulky but these larger boards are made from foam which makes them very buoyant, they’re also very wide which makes them more stable to ride as they don’t wobble as much as narrower boards.

Foam Board Benefits:

  • Ideal for beginners – buoyant and safer
  • Great for stability
  • Soft top means you won’t hurt yourself if you get a knock from the board
  • Wide and sturdy

Once you’ve had your first few lessons and you’re keen to get stuck into surfing by yourself, you’ll want to buy a surfboard of your own. We strongly recommend buying a foam board to begin with. Don’t be tempted by smaller shiny boards, as buying one that’s too small can impede your progress. Buying your own foamie means you can spend longer practising your technique without having to learn how to use a new board each time if you were to hire one. Foamies tend to hold their price so you can sell it when you decide to move on to a hard board. Get your foundations sorted before you move on to other boards. If you’re still unsure you can read the Women + Waves guide on 5 simple steps to buying your first surfboard.

Leash

The leash is the long lead that attaches you to the board and stops it floating away. They can vary in length but will be at least as long as your board and attach to your ankle via a velcro strap. While leashes are sold separately from boards, most surf shops can recommend the right one to pair with your specific board, ensuring a proper fit.

Board Wax

Surf wax is a must-have for keeping your grip on the board. It’s applied to the top surface to make it grippier, helping your feet stay secure when standing. Start by selecting a wax suited to your water temperature. Begin with a clean, dry board, and apply a base coat using small circular motions, concentrating on the areas where your feet will land. Once the basecoat is in place, add a topcoat using the same technique to create texture and grip. For even better traction, finish with diagonal strokes to form small bumps. Don’t forget to reapply wax before every session to ensure your board is always surf-ready!

Step 2. Safety Gear

Safety is key when hitting the waves, and having the right gear ensures you can enjoy your time in the surf to the fullest. While choosing the right surfboard is the first step, it’s the rest of your equipment that keeps you protected and comfortable in the water. From a high-quality wetsuit to wetsuit booties, every piece of gear plays a role in your safety. This guide will walk you through everything you need to kickstart your surfing journey, ensuring you’re well-prepared, confident, and ready to make the most of every wave.

Wetsuits

Wetsuits are an essential part of your surf gear, especially if you’re riding waves in colder climates. Made from neoprene, these snug, skin-tight suits keep you warm, protect you from the sun, and shield you from bumps and scrapes in the water. With so many different styles and thicknesses to choose from, finding the right wetsuit can feel overwhelming at first, but once you know what to look for, it’s a breeze. For your first surf lesson, your surf school will likely provide a wetsuit, so you won’t need to worry. But trust us- once the surfing bug bites, you’ll want to invest in your own. Ready to pick the perfect fit? Check out our wetsuit-buying guide for tips and recommendations to get you started.

Wetsuit Types

Wetsuits come in different types for different climates and preferences. Depending on where you’re planning on surfing you’ll need to pick a wetsuit that works for you. Choose from:

  • Full Body Wetsuit – Covers arms and legs
  • Shortie Wetsuit – Covers body, upper arms and legs
  • Back Zip – Zips up the back
  • Chest Zip – Zips across the front of your chest
  • No Zip

Wetsuit Thickness

For different water temperatures, you’ll require a different thickness of wetsuit. The measurements for wetsuits are two numbers – the biggest number is the thickness of the warmest/thickest material used around the torso, where you want to stay warmest. The smaller number is the thickness of the thinner material that is used around the legs and arms, where you’ll need more freedom of movement. Measurements are usually:

  • 3/2 mm for summer or milder waters
  • 4/3 mm for cool temperatures
  • 5/4 mm for colder temperature

Rash Guard

Rash vests or ‘Rashies’ are used under your wetsuit to stop the wetsuit rubbing against your skin. Lycra tops are also used in a hot climate over a bikini or swimsuit to protect you from the sun. They aren’t essential but are often used for surf lessons as identifiers to keep groups together.

Wetsuit Boots

Most often used in colder climates, wetsuit boots can also vary in thickness. They keep your feet warm but also protect your feet from sharp reefs, beach debris or rocks.

Swimsuit or Bikini

The big question: what to wear under your wetsuit – or for those no-wetsuit days? Finding a bikini that stays put can be a real challenge. The key is to choose swimwear designed with surfers in mind. Opt for trusted surf brands that focus on secure, women-tailored fits to avoid any unexpected wardrobe malfunctions while riding the waves. Stay stylish, comfortable, and confident out there!

Step 3. Surf Training Tools

Surf training tools can be a real game-changer when you’re learning to surf for the first time. Using these handy tools can help you build strength, balance, and confidence before you even hit the water. From balance boards to resistance bands, these tools are your secret weapons for surfing success. Whether you’re training on the beach, at home, or even at the gym, using training tools like these makes learning to surf fun and effective!

Balance Board

Balance boards are an awesome tool for building core strength and sharpening your balance skills. Balance boards are sturdy boards perched on a cork roller, challenging you to stay upright while mimicking the movement of surfing or skating. The goal? Stand on the board, both feet planted, and find your balance on the roller. It’s fantastic for improving posture and stability, so when you hit the waves you’ll feel steady and confident.

Pop-Up Trainer

Want to perfect your pop-up on land? You can use a yoga mat or a practice mat in your home and build it into part of your workout. The more you practise your pop-up at home the more natural the movement will become and the easier it will be in the ocean on a surfboard!

Surf Skate

For the full surf vibe, grab a skateboard or surf skate to practice those carving turns on land. Surf skate perfectly mimics the movement of a surfboard on the waves and is the closest thing you can get to surf training when there are no waves! Step 5. Accessories

No surfer is complete without the right accessories to keep them safe, comfortable, and ready to ride every wave with confidence. These handy accessories will not only make your surfing more enjoyable but also keep you safe and well-prepared, so you can focus on having fun in the waves!

Sunscreen

Taking care of your skin is one of the most important parts of being in the ocean. Being under the sun and in the salty sea for long periods can be damaging to your skin. Having a good reef-safe, water-resistant sunscreen with 50+ SPF is a must. Women + Waves essential skin care tips for surfers gives you the lowdown on how to best take care of yourself and catch epic waves.

Towel or Poncho

A quick-dry surf poncho is a great way to change in and out of your gear while preserving your dignity! You can also find quick dry surf towels that roll up into easy-to-use travel packs for when you’re travelling light.

Dry Bag

Essential for keeping your phone, keys, camera and other tech goods safe and dry while you surf.

Lockboxes are great for when you’ve started surfing solo and you drive down to the beach. They’re secure boxes you can attach to your car to leave your keys in while you surf.

Step 6. Surf Spots & Etiquette

Surfing can be a territorial sport, especially for beginners who aren’t yet familiar with the etiquette, rules or where it’s best to surf. Before hitting the waves, it’s a smart move to learn about the local surf spots and understand the area. Building your surf knowledge will help you navigate the lineup with confidence, knowing which spots are best suited for your skill level and where you’ll feel comfortable. The more you know about the surf conditions and etiquette, the more enjoyable and respectful your experience will be out on the water.

Find Beginner-Friendly Breaks

Research new locations ahead of time so you know where the beginner-friendly breaks are. If you’re unsure, ask a local or a lifeguard before you get in the water. Look for small, gentle waves with sandy bottoms. Some locations are more beginner-friendly than others, Barbados or Bali are, in our opinion, the best and safest places to learn, with gentle waves, sandy breaks and warm tropical weather.

Learn Surf Etiquette

Learning surf etiquette is an important part of learning to surf, especially when you’re starting to paddle out back and sit in the line-up. The rules of surfing etiquette might seem confusing at first but once you get in the sea and start using them you’ll see how much sense it makes! You can check out some videos like Women + Waves Rules For Surfing A Crowded Line-Up, but here are the key rules for surfing etiquette:

  • Don’t drop in on someone’s wave
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Respect locals and your fellow surfers
  • Stay out of the way while paddling out

Step 7. Fitness Prep

The fitter you are, the easier learning to surf will be. That’s not to say you have to be an Olympic athlete to participate, it’s still accessible for everyone! But having a good base level of fitness will definitely make certain aspects, like paddling out and popping up, feel easier and more natural. To prepare, try incorporating surf-specific workouts into your routine a few times a week. These will help build your stamina and core strength, which are key for paddling and mastering those pop-ups. Yoga and stretching are also fantastic for improving your flexibility and mobility, essential for getting your feet on the board with ease.

Surf Fitness Tips

  • Focus on cardio, core strength, and flexibility
  • Use online videos to practise mobility, like the Women + Waves Mobility Video
  • Practice swimming to boost water confidence and improve stamina in the water
  • Dynamic Stretching pre-workout
  • Stretching post-surf and post-workout

Your mindset plays a major role in your physical progress. We understand how tough it can be to push through those mental hurdles, but the good news is there are plenty of strategies to help you shift your perspective. With the right mindset, you can overcome any barrier and start progressing towards becoming the confident, shredding surfer you’ve always dreamed of!
